Riomaggiore reads like a novel and that’s how it feels on the spot. The fact that it is built a little tighter than the other villages makes it feel very quiet and cosy. You can find your way to the water via Piazza Vignaioli, where you can reach the sea via a stone formation.

If you simply want to hang out and enjoy the sun on the beach after a stressful day of exploring, then Manarola is the best choice with the largest beach of the five villages. Spend a quiet day here and recharge your batteries for the next adventure.

We would go back to Vernazza every time for a great sunset right on the water. Paired with a pizza from Ristorante Vulnetia, people gather on the long jetty to dangle their feet in the water and let the day come to an end.

Manarola is probably the most famous village of Cinque Terre thanks to Nessun Dorma. Here you can enjoy a cool drink and a small snack at lunchtime with a breathtaking view over the Ligurian countryside.

If you just want a quick snack to take away, you’ll find super tasty fish and chips at Il Pescato Cucinato.

It offers a delightful opportunity to indulge  the essence of Ligurian tradition, complemented by the distinctive twist imparted by the Viviani family to international cuisine.

Let your soul dangle in Cinque Terre

Summary

For us, Cinque Terre is a must-visit place, as it promises a culinary journey through Liguria in addition to breathtaking views of the coast of northern Italy and the unique hiking trails. We would recommend 3 days so that you can explore all the villages at your leisure and relax on the nearest beach after a hike.

How to get around

There are two ways to get from one great place to the next in Cinque Terre, and possibly an exotic third.

The most relaxed option is to get a train ticket, as you can reach each village in turn within a maximum of 8 minutes drive. We parked our car at the train station in La Spezia and took the train from there.

The second option is to take the hiking trail along the coast. However, we recommend that you plan a few extra days for this, as it is around 20 km from Monterosso al Mare to Riomaggiore.

There is also the option of exploring Cinque Terre by boat, although this is less common.

Travel time

We would say that the best time to visit is in April/May, as temperatures between 15°C and 20°C are perfect for hiking. If you prefer warmer months such as June to August, be prepared for crowded roads and beaches.
