Well known as the capital of the Finnish region of Lapland and is considered the home of Santa, with attractions such as the Santa Claus Village. If you would like to get the full Christmas experience Rovaniemi is your place to be.
Saariselkä, located a little further north, the chances of seeing the Northern Lights are even greater here. Here are you surrounded by pure nature and also there is the northernmost Ski Resort in Europe. We went night skiing there on the famous slope with the fairy lights.

If you like to visit Finnish Lapland by plane, Ivalo is the perfect place to arrive. From there you can reach Saariselkä in just 25 minutes. It’s located directly on Lake Inari, where we were lucky enough to marvel at the Northern Lights one night.
The region around Kittilä is known for its unspoilt nature and diverse outdoor activities such as skiing and hiking. The Levi Ski Resort is a popular attraction and from there it’s easy to visit the famous and iconic photo spot, Santa’s Cabin from the Christmas story movie.

This is our insider tip for the best and freshest food we’ve had in Lapland. The owners Minna and Arno always cook for you with local ingredients, such as freshly picked herbs or fish caught a few hours ago while ice fishing.
On our way home we had to try a reindeer burger. We found what we were looking for at the cozy Bistro Ravintola Roka. A definite recommendation.

Located on the sunny side of the mountain Kaunispää you can enjoy having dinner with a breathtaking view over Lapland.
If you love fish soup, this is the place to go, as a local told us. So we went there, but the fish soup was already sold out… So be there at lunchtime to get some!

If you go to Lapland then a stay at Arctic Sky with Minna and Arno is a must! Here you will find everything you need for your perfect Lapland experience. In addition to the option of renting your own cabin with sauna and fireplace, you can also rent a single room with shared sauna and kitchen. They are very welcoming and offer you all kinds of activities such as snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, husky sledging, ice fishing and much more. They will also rouse you from your beds when the first Northern Lights appear in the sky above the accommodation. In the morning you can look forward to a great breakfast by the campfire, where you can toast your own bread over the fire.
From our point of view, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that we wanted to have with such an accommodation. Would we do it again? We don’t know for sure. Our dream was to see the Northern Lights directly from our bed, but unfortunately the weather put a spanner in the works and it was cloudy and snowing the whole time. The thing is, you just need a hell of luck for that to happen. So if you want to book accommodation like this, be aware of that. Nevertheless, we had a wonderful stay and were able to sit in the hot tub while it snowed down on us. Still a highlight of our Lapland trip!

Lapland makes you want more! We would have never thought that the landscape, nature and above all the people there would blow us away so much that we would want to escape here every winter.
In addition to all the great adventures that Lapland offered us, it was the peace and quiet and the great feeling of slowing down that really allowed us to switch off. In conclusion, we can only say: Go & see for yourself! 🙂
In order to get around in Lapland it is absolutely necessary to rent a car. This allows you to set off on your own to hunt the Northern Lights. We travelled by car from Munich to Lapland back then, which was certainly an adventure, but in hindsight we would definitely take the plane.
It all depends on which Lapland experience you want to have. If you fancy icy temperatures, snowy landscapes and seeing the Northern Lights then November to March is the time to go. However, some locals have recommended January/February as statistically the best month to see the Northern Lights.
If you prefer hiking, camping and enjoying the Finnish countryside in pleasant temperatures, then the summer months from June to August are the perfect months for you.
