PLAces

In the heart of Menton you will find the famous, colorful Saint-Michel Basilica. The square in front of the basilica invites you to relax before taking the yellow steps of Menton to the Plage de Sablettes.

From the Basilica of Saint-Michel, you have the option of walking through the narrow streets of Menton up to the Quartier Garavan. There you have a great panoramic view of the French Riviera.

Arenal Volcano National Parc

Rio Celeste National Parc

The Arenal Volcano is the iconic centerpiece of this lush national park. Hiking trails wind through old lava fields and rainforest, offering stunning views of the volcano and surrounding landscapes. It’s a must for anyone wanting a classic Costa Rica experience – nature, adventure, and a touch of wild beauty.

This place feels like a scene from a fairytale. The bright turquoise river, colored by a natural mineral reaction, winds through dense jungle and leads to a breathtaking waterfall. The hike can be muddy, but it’s 100% worth it – Rio Celeste is one of Costa Rica’s most magical sights.

To get the best view of Menton, you should walk across the Plage des Sablettes to the Port des Sablettes and go onto the jetty that reaches up to the stones.

The Plage de Fossan is perfect for watching the sunset & sunrise. There are numerous bars and restaurants along the promenade for refreshments after a swim.

La Fortuna Waterfall

Mistico National Parc

Just a short drive from the town center, this powerful waterfall crashes into a deep blue pool surrounded by jungle. After descending the steep staircase, you can cool off with a refreshing swim or just enjoy the view. It’s a perfect half-day trip for nature lovers and photographers.

If you love rainforest vibes and wildlife spotting, this park is for you. You’ll cross 15 bridges – some of them hanging high above the jungle canopy – while keeping an eye out for monkeys, toucans, and colorful frogs. It’s peaceful, scenic, and a bit of an adventure.

summary

Lush Life in La Fortuna

in a nutshell

La Fortuna is the perfect base for exploring Costa Rica’s lush north. Surrounded by volcanoes, waterfalls and rainforest, it offers the ideal mix of adventure and relaxation. Three to four days are enough to see the main sights like Arenal Volcano, La Fortuna Waterfall, and nearby parks – all within short driving distance.

In addition to exciting outdoor activities, you’ll find cozy cafés, good restaurants, and natural hot springs to unwind after a long hike.

How to get around

We highly recommend renting a car if you want to explore the area freely – especially for places like Rio Celeste or Mistico Hanging Bridges, which are outside the town center.

Within La Fortuna itself, you can easily walk or take a short taxi ride to most spots. Many hotels also offer shuttle services to major attractions.

Travel time

The best time to visit La Fortuna is during the dry season from December to April, when you’ll get the most sunshine and clear volcano views.

The green season (May to November) brings more rain, especially in the afternoons, but it also means fewer tourists, lush landscapes, and better prices. Just pack a light rain jacket and good hiking shoes!
